Frequently Asked Questions

Adeptus Minneapolis was founded in June 2002 by Kevin Frey, Steve Poeschl Sr. and James Reijo to respond to a real-world issue that, sooner or latter, affects every gamer: work and family eventually become more important than rolling dice to see if you make your armor save. Despite adulthood, the founders are passionate Warhammer players, so when they do have time to game it should be the best gaming possible with the best players possible.
Adeptus Minneapolis responded to this problem with a simple mission: find the best players in the Minneapolis/St. Paul area and give them a resource to connect with, and game with, one another. This mission has led Adeptus Minneapolis to create a community for tactical improvement, painting technique and--most importantly--fellowship with other hobbyists.
On our message boards or at our monthly meetings games can be scheduled, rules questions can be answered, or painting/modeling tips can be given quickly and by people with a very low "BS" factor. Everyone in Adeptus Minneapolis wants to make sure their precious spare hobby time is used in the best way possible. We achieve that by creating an atmosphere dedicated to the enjoyment of the hobby. No one wants to spend three hours arguing over rules, we want to have a great time playing. Period.

Adeptus Minneapolis plays a wide variety of Games Workshop games. Within our ranks are members who have years of experience playing Warhammer 40k, Warhammer Fantasy Battle, Battlefleet Gothic, Inquisitor, Talisman, Gorkamorka, Warhammer Quest and Mordheim--to name just a few! We are an open minded bunch and willing to give just about anything a try! While Adeptus Minneapolis is focused on Games Workshop games, some members do play other games--including Warmachine and others!

Adeptus Minneapolis holds its official meeting the second Tuesday of every month. The meeting is held at Phoenix Games in Minneapolis. The meeting starts at promptly at 6PM, lasts about half an hour, and members quickly pair (or quad!) off for games afterward. Phoenix Games has made a special arrangement with us to stay open late (usually around 10pm, but sometimes later) on meeting night, so you can generally count on getting three or four solid hours of quality gaming in after the meeting. If there is a change to this schedule, members will be notified via e-mail and on the message board.

As of January 2006, there are 74 Adeptus Minneapolis members and we usually add one or two new members every month. The typical age of our members is between 25 and 40. We currently have 1 Youngblood member who is under the age of 18.

Adeptus Minneapolis wants to make sure that we have a strong following of the best players. What does it take to be the "best"? Being the best doesn't mean being a tournament winner (though we have a few of those!), it doesn't mean you're a great painter (though we have a few of those, too!), nor does it mean being a great tactician (yep, we have plenty of them!) What makes you one of the "best" players is that you love to play the game and are interested in having a great time playing in a sportsmanlike manner.
Sportsmanship is something we take very seriously and is the only requirement we have of our members. Some of our members are among the best generals and modelers in the hobby--but all of our members are committed to the enjoyment of the game, win or lose. Also note, that being part of Adeptus Minneapolis means that you represent our group whenever you play. It is our member's responsibility to introduce us to new faces and show everyone that our goal is to have fun playing Games Workshop Games.
If this sounds like a group you want to be a part of, drop by our message boards or attend a meeting and introduce yourself! Then, all you have to do is pay your yearly dues and submit your contact information.

At this time, membership is restricted to individuals 18 and over. If you are under age 18 you can request sponsorship from an existing Adeptus Minneapolis member-in-good-standing. The other method allows children of members to become "Youngbloods", giving them full membership. Youngblood members are still expected to abide by the same sportsmanship rules regular members are.
-
We do ask $20.00 per year in dues from our members. There are no plans at this time to increase membership dues.
-
Ahhhhh, that's better. While the biggest benefit is having a vast array of knowledge and skills in the Games Workshop Universe at your disposal, we do give you some filthy lucre in exchange for your, ummm, filthy lucre. You get an Adeptus Minneapolis e-mail address for your personal use, access to members-only message boards on the Adeptus Minneapolis web-site, and you can purchase a members-only Adeptus Minneapolis tee-shirt and you can play in club sponsored events such as tournaments and campaigns. Most of the "member's only" events that we run have some sort of prize budget too! As if that's not enough, a 20% discount on all Games Workshop products at Phoenix Games on meeting nights!
It simply wasn't fiscally responsible to include shirts as part of membership dues.
-
Send a message to Agonestes on our message boards. He will get back to you on colors, styles and sizes. He has a countless shirt options, so we wont list them all here. But needless to say, if you can wear it, chances are he can "Adeptusize It".

Aside from post-meeting gaming, members run game nights, narrative campaigns, tournaments and leagues, and painting challenges. There's also a steady base of players you can draw opponents from. Many of our members play at Phoenix Games' on Thursday night for WHFB and Friday night for WH40K and are always up for a game with a fellow member or anyone else who wants to play.

Can we! (Yes, actually, we can!) Any member is welcome to organize an event at any time. Simply mention the idea at a meeting or on the message boards and you're off and running! The message board and Adeptus Meetings are at your disposal to use as you see fit. If you need special access to the message boards to promote your event, contact Badgob (AKA James) on the message boards.
Remember: The organizer(s) are required to do 95% of the work. Odds are you'll quickly find other members willing to help out with your event. Our members have skills and knowledge in a wide-range of areas, use that knowledge to your advantage! The success of your event is directly proportional to the amount of time and energy you put into it's creation and promotion. Adeptus Members generally run two types of events: "Open" Events, where everyone is invited to participate in the event. And "Member's Only" Events, where participation is restricted to Adeptus Members.
Generally speaking, "Open" Events are reserved for the type of event that is a "one-time" or non-reocurring event (like a game day or painting tutorial.) These types of events are a great way to help the club advertise and branch out to new players or those persons who might be interested in what Adeptus Minneapolis is all about.
"Member's Only" (or "Closed") events should be primarily for those events which require more effort or time to create or administer, or those that require a consistant level of commited players. Campaigns, Leagues, and other long-term events fall best into this category. On occasion, some events that might seem to be best suited as "open" can actually be run as "closed" events and vise-versa. Again, this is always at the discretion of the event organizer(s).

That's a damn lie and you know it! Errr....I mean...not anymore! Our May 2003 event was a Warhammer Fantasy league, and we also ran a Mordheim Campaign. This year we started our Warhammer Escaltion League, where players must paint 200 points a month until they reach 2000! We can say without a doubt that at least half of Adeptus Minneapolis plays Warhammmer Fantasy Battles (WHFB)! Rumor also has it that Badgob wants to get his Warhammer Quest stuff dusted off, but we all know how long that's going to take! Although 40K seems to be the game most of our members enjoy, we also enjoy playing all Games Workshop games and welcome the opportunity to expand our horizons and play specialist games, such as Battlefleet Gothic, Mordheim, and Necromunda.

In short: Everything. Finding players who know what good sportsmanship is, and practice it, was the whole reason for founding the club. This is one of those issues that we feel defines our club as a whole, and is something we do not take lightly. Our members pride themselves on great sportsmanship both on and off the tournament circuit. We want to get in the best gaming all the time, every time! Some of us like a higher level of strategy or competition than others, but we all want to make sure that everyone involved is having a great time! Our sportsmanship goal is simple: win or lose, you still had an excellent time playing.

At this time, we are no longer issuing membership cards to members as the need for them has dissappeared.

"Master Crafted" is the quarterly journal by and for the members of Adeptus Minneapolis. It contains articles on tactics, painting, Black Library fiction, and items of general fan-interest. Master Crafted is written and created entirely by the members of Adeptus Minneapolis--everything from the model photos to the typesetting. It is available as a download from the Adeptus Minneapolis website and there are usually a few "real world" copies available the month it is released. (The best way to guarantee that you get a printed copy is to submit an article!)
-
Isn't "Master Crafted" supposed to be online?
"Master Crafted" is supposed to be online. However, I have not had the time to get this done. Rest assured that you will see Masted Crafted online very soon.
-
Easy! Send an e-mail to MasterCrafted@adeptusminneapolis.com, post a note on the message boards saying "Hey, I want to write for Master Crafted!", or send an e-mail directly to the Master Crafted editor at danno@adeptusminneapolis.com. Master Crafted will accept submissions on any aspect of the Games Workshop hobby, or...for that matter...gaming in general. If you have a good article on running a D&D campaign, pitch it!
